Who Really Overthrew Hawaii's Monarchy?

I just had to take this subject on and may go on about it for many-a-blog because it thoroughly amazes me that a small number of people still hold fast to the idea that "Hawaiians" overthrew their own monarchy and that the overthrow was widely accepted by the "Hawaiians."

In reality, every single person that took part in the overthrow was either a 2nd generation SON of a missionary or they were businessmen, and yes, most of the businessmen were from America with the exception of one man from Scotland, another from Germany, and another from...Tasmania. And that was out of the 22 people involved in the "Provisional Government," and all those involved in the "Committee of Safety," and also anyone who testified against the Hawaiian people for the Morgan Report. Also, it is important to note here that the 2nd generation missionaries almost in total went on to become big businessmen, with only a few dedicating themselves to other high-powered, but less well paid jobs.

What is most important to note here is this: NOT A SINGLE NATIVE HAWAIIAN TOOK PART IN THE OVERTHROW. Not even a part Hawaiian - NONE took part.

What is also of importance to note is that it was by racism and through the judgment of the Hawaiian ways that people felt they were "in the right" for taking over the Hawaiian lands. They believed that the Native Hawaiians were incapable of governing themselves correctly.

So, say hypothetically that, as members of the Provisional Government stated, that the Queen (God bless her soul) was really not that great of a lady. Does that give anyone the right to overthrow a government? Let's take a look at the US government. The world over knows that George W. Bush should probably stop existing soon before the world is destroyed, but does that mean that members from countries such as Iran should come to the US without any American consent
and just set up a new government for Americans? Of course not! And if there was a small group of 2nd generation Iranians in our country that would help, would it make it more correct to overthrow the US government? No way! What no Islam? The Iranian government thinks Islam is the most important! Americans should have to be like Islam!...I could just see it all now. What ignorant hypocrites some people can be to think that it's alright to turn Hawaiians into Americans, but it wouldn't be alright to turn America into an Islamic state.

So, I will leave this blog, much the way I left my last one; If you go to a country and you don't like it because it's not enough like the one you came from, don't be so presumptuous to think that the whole world would rather be like your home country, GO HOME WHERE YOU BELONG. The people who were in that country before you like it the way it is and will themselves do whatever changing that needs to be done to suit their own needs.

Really Interesting about the "Committee of Safety"

The "Committee of Safety" was not the first of its kind. Did you know that the revolutionists during the American Revolution also had a "Committee of Safety" which served much of the same purpose of Hawaii's version?

See Committee of Safety to read about the American Revolution's version.

Using a name like this would have served an important purpose for the conspirators of Hawaii's revolution. If you remember, the American Revolution hadn't been too distant in the past around the time of Hawaii's revolution. By alluding to similarities in the revolutions, Hawaiian Conspirators were seeking to draw parallels between the tyranny of England's monarchy circa the late 1700's and the monarchy of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

I'm sure some Americans took the bate, but America finally took over Hawaii more to suit its political purposes rather than to be ideologically.

As a look into the spoiled minds of those conspirators that sought in all ways to draw themselves closer to the United States, it never ceases to amaze me that they could imagine themselves at all in a situation which is parallel to that of the United States pre-Revolution era. The Americans LEFT ENGLAND and were sloughing off a distant power. Hawaii's revolutionists came from other places TO Hawaii and didn't like the government there and decided to overthrow it. It reminds me of one of my relatives by marriage that likes to come to my house and reorganize things. GO HOME AND REORGANIZE YOUR OWN DAMN HOUSE!!!

Check the date on this one

In case you're not familiar with all the rebels of the Hawaiian Revolution, Z.S. Spalding was party to the rebellion. Check the date on this one:

Mr. Seward to Mr. Spalding.

[Confidential.]

No. 42.] DEPARTMENT OF STATE,
Washington, July 5, 1868.
Z. S. SPALDING, Esq., etc.:
SIR: Your letter of the 14th of April has been received
and carefully read. The information which you give of the
excitement which is prevailing in Honolulu in regard to
the annexation of the Sandwich Islands is very
interesting. You suggest a system of proceeding here
with reference to that object which could not possibly,
at the present time, obtain the sanction of any
department of this Government.

Without going into an explanation of the causes for the
condition of national sentiment which temporarily exists,
it is enough to say that the public attention sensibly
continues to be fastened upon the domestic questions
which have grown out of the late civil war. The public
mind refuses to dismiss these questions even so far as
to entertain the higher but more remote questions of
national extension and aggrandizement. The periodical
Presidential and Congressional elections are approaching.
Each of the political parties seems to suppose that
economy and retrenchment will be prevailing
considerations in that election and the leaders of each
party therefore seem to shrink from every suggestion
which may involve any new national enterprise, and
especially any foreign one. How long sentiments of this
sort may control the proceedings of the Government is
uncertain, but, in the meantime, it will be well for you
not to allow extravagant expectations of sympathy
between the United States and the friends of annexation
in the islands to influence your own conduct. You will
continue, however, to write me upon the subject freely
as you have hitherto done.
I am, etc.,
WILLIAM H. SEWARD.

Elaine Willman, a Creepy Sort of Lady

Maybe I should create a list of the creepiest people that are against our movement for self-determination. If I did, Elaine Willman would certainly be on that list.

Elaine Willman, in all her writings makes an example of some of the worst racism known to come from the eurocentric community. She constantly and consistently makes a job out of pulling apart and suing any kind of programs which serve the Native American community and the communities of any indigenous people within the boarders of the United States. What is most disgusting about her twisted rhetoric is her constant hyperfocus on her own race as being a source of license and authority to say what certain races of people (brown people) should and shouldn't be able to do. Elaine Willman consistently cites that her own ancestry is that of Cherokee descent from both her parents. Well Elaine, last time I checked, it's kind of hard to say you're part of a group of people when EVERYTHING YOU DO serves to bring them to ruin! Follow this link to see what real Indians think of Elaine Willman and her organization Citizens Equal Rights Alliance (CERA).

Here's some links to more information about this "Creepy Sort of Lady":

"Elaine Speaks Out"
Elaine's view on the Akaka Bill from the Hawaiian Reporter

And something even scarier,
I don't know if we should contact these people and let them know who they're really dealing with, but she's been hired by Hobart Village as the "director of economic development and tribal affairs." Um OOPS? Seems she blinded them with her credentials. Here's the link to more info about that:

Greenbay Press

And finally, (I should just give up now and go write a book), I think what is important to learn from all this is some of the true nature of racism and what that means for us as Hawaiians. A lot of people say a lot of racist things about us and sometimes those ideas come out more eloquently than the words of others. Elaine is a prime example of someone who just lets it all hang out. By studying and understanding what she is saying and by understanding her point of view, it serves us well in future debates with people who say that we are being racist when we are looking for reconciliation based on racist actions that have been taken against the Native Hawaiian people.

Elaine's point of view is that of strict patriotism to the UNITED STATES and everything that entails, but in addition, her perspective is that of neocolonialism. Ultimately, Elaine proves that such a perspective is inherently racist and that America was built on racist policy. On the other hand, Native Hawaiians and politicians everywhere are trying with all their might to create policy that is PONO first, rather than trying to maintain the status quo of American Imperialism. Further examination of this contrast in ideologies is an excellent way to further our understanding on many subjects, especially the racism being ignited in the movement towards Hawaiians' self-determination.

Hawaiian Genocide

Genocide

The following is a link to the United Nation’s Convention on Genocide which took place on Dec. 9, 1948:

www.hrweb.org/legal/genocide.html

It defines genocide as:

• (a) Killing members of the group;
• (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
• (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
• (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
• (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

The Historical context of this definition is the post genocide of the Jewish people during WWII. While the definition is taken by some to be mean a calculated and conscious annihilation of people of a certain group, there is actually a deeper wisdom as to the true nature of genocide found in this definition. Genocide in this definition is ANY effort made, whether conscious or not, which causes a certain group of people to be destroyed in any manner.

One method of genocide which is being experienced by the Hawaiian people is “diaspora,” which is the spreading out of people which causes them to cease to exist by assimilation into other cultures and geographic locations. As we know today (through the US Census), almost half of the Hawaiians in this world are having to live outside of Hawaii.
Another form of genocide which is especially egregious is the internment of Hawaiians in the concentrations camps that are better known as “corrections facilities.” These jails and prisons located on the Hawaiian islands consist of around 40% Native Hawaiians, while the Native Hawaiian population in total in Hawaii is only around 12-20% (statistics on Native Hawaiian population in Hawaii differ depending on where you look, although all ranges of statistics are reported by equally legitimate sources.) What is the worst of all regarding these concentration camps is that the Hawaiian people are now being forcibly removed from their land and put in facilities on the mainland because of “overcrowding.”
I recently had a conversation with a representative from Kau Inoa because I wanted to get access to the prisons in order to register Native Hawaiians living there. It turned out that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs had already tried to do this and that it was stated that no project could take place in the prisons which would heighten the awareness of racial differences due to an already apparent problem within the prison system over racial tensions.

Ironic isn’t it?

To look at this situation more abstractly – The Hawaiian people are being forced to undergo an unnatural poverty which has resulted from the robbery of our land. Poverty, no matter which way you look at it, results in certain behavioral outcomes for people. If you rob us – as a group- of our land, thereby forcing us into poverty, and then make laws against the behavioral outcomes which are natural to poverty, and then use those laws to render the “law-breakers” unable to participate in their own government, you have a formula for genocide.

I mention all this because it’s important to detect genocide in all its flavors. Last time I was home, a certain group of Hawaiian home owners were bragging to me about how they “cleaned up” their neighborhood and got all those evil drug dealers sent to prison. After they were through, they washed their hands of the whole situation.

Those evil drug dealers, however, were other Hawaiians and their being sent to prison IS genocide. Why would we be doing this to our own selves? How could the colonization in our minds become so thick that we’ve become unable to see the true process at work against us, that we should offer our own selves up as willing culprits?

First post - new blog

Welcome to this new blog. This blog is not here for my own sake, but for the sake of everyone who wishes to have a place to communicate about the most current subjects regarding the Hawaiian Independence movements and all the myriad of subjects which are connected to it.

I will try and post the most diverse range of subjects possible, but if I fail to mention anything, please let me know. Likewise, if anyone has any comments on how I can make this blog more useful, please let me know.

Some subjects which are core to the movement right now include the subjects of what is independence or sovereignty and what could be the result of the passing of the Hawaiian recognition bill (aka the Akaka Bill)? There are also leadership issues among those in OHA and among other large groups of people who are leading us towards some form of independence. Many other subjects could be mentioned here.

I plan to moderate this blog in the following way: I believe that a wide array of opinion is acceptable here and I know this subject can get people pretty bent out of shape and so I will allow that. What I will not tolerate is TOO much misinformation. When I say TOO MUCH, I mean to say that sometimes misinformation is the very subject that we need to discuss, but there are times when I will ask that a poster please provide some kind of reference and/or quotes to what they are talking about in order that we are working with reality rather than fiction.

All in all, I hope people will be respectful of each other and try to post comments which are rich in fact and personal opinion and hopefully a wide variety of references from which we can draw our understanding.
